Hachiro Kiyokawa was active in the turmoil at the end of the Shogunate and a forerunner of the Meiji Restoration. The museum displays part of its collection of more than 400 articles left by Kiyokawa, letters exchanged between comrades, and historical records related to the Meiji Restoration. Fifty of these articles are designated as cultural properties by Yamagata Prefecture, and 397 are designated as cultural properties by Shonai-machi.
