Located on a hilltop known for its panoramic view of Risshakuji Temple, this museum commemorates the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho, who visited Yamadera in 1689 on the journey chronicled in his travel journal “Narrow Road to the Deep North”. The exhibits include displays of Basho's original handwritten poems, works by his followers, and Edo-period artworks. A seminar room is available for rent at the museum (from ¥1,500). Ceremonial whisked matcha green tea is offered in the tea house (¥450-600).
