Yamagata Prefectural Museum was established at Kajo Park in 1971. It is a general museum affiliated with the Yamagata Prefectural Education Museum and the Nature Study Garden. 

There are many exhibits on natural history, history and culture in Yamagata Prefecture, including the Jomon no Megami (a goddess figure from the Jomon era,  known as the Nishinomae ceramic figure), a nationally designated important cultural property, and Daikaigyu (Yamagata sea cow fossil)
a prefectural natural monument.
